Maikel Hurtado was born in Cuba and moved to Stockhold, Sweden when he was 15. In 2004, he hit .235/.341/.338 for the Alby Stars, playing right field regularly. He also pitched often, going 0-7 with a 9.19 ERA and 38 walks in 31 1/3 IP. He led the Elitserien in losses.
Coming to the US for junior college, he was 2-0 with nine saves in 2005 and 2-0 with 7 saves in 2006 for De Anza College. Transferring to Siena, he had a 5.86 ERA and .349 opponent average with no decisions in 2007. His record in 2008 fell to 1-2, 8.27 as a senior.
Hurtado was a surprise addition for Sweden's preliminary 40-man roster for the 2009 Baseball World Cup.
