Macon Redbirds

From BR Bullpen

Traditionally known as the Macon Peaches, the Macon, GA minor league team became the Macon Redbirds in 1983 when they were a St. Louis Cardinals affiliate. The team went 71-73 under manager Lloyd Merritt and drew 37,992 fans (8th in the 10-team league). The South Atlantic League team scored 767 and allowed a league-high 835 runs (though they somehow tied for the league lead with 10 shutouts). They did lead the league with 259 steals, thanks mostly to the efforts of record-setting outfielder Vince Coleman. Coleman, the team's lone All-Star, set an Organized Baseball record by stealing 145 bases (in 176 tries). Coleman hit .350/~.432/.399 and won the batting title. Surprisingly, he only scored 99 runs, 29 less than the league leader, and only tied for third in runs. C Marty Pevey batted .312/~.379/.422 and was 8th in the circuit in average while C Tom Pagnozzi hit .246/~.328/.316 in 18 games on his way to one of the best careers from the club's players. The next year, they became a Pittsburgh Pirates farm team, the Macon Pirates.
