Mártires Astacio was a shortstop for the Dominican national team in the 1970 Amateur World Series and 1970 Central American and Caribbean Games (winning a Silver Medal). Playing left field for the Dominicans in the 1971 Pan American Games, he made a circus catch in a win over Silver Medal-winning Team USA but the Dominicans only tied for 5th.
