Biographical Information[edit]
Pitcher Luke Bell made his professional debut in 2023 with the ACL White Sox, going 0-1, 1.69 in 6 games. He had been at Xavier University earlier that year, but his mediocre record of 1-4, 7.28 meant that he was passed up in the 2023 amateur draft and had to sign with the Chicago White Sox as an undrafted free agent on July 16th. In 2024, he split the season between the Class A Kannapolis Cannon Ballers and the High A Winston-Salem Dash. He was very good at Kannapolis, going 2-3, 2.44 in 28 games, but he struggled at the higher level, where his ERA was 14.40 in 5 games.
He was born in Cincinnati, OH but went to high school in Chandler, AZ, from where he was drafted by the Arizona Diamondbacks in the 34th round of the 2019 amateur draft. He declined their offer and went to a local community college for a year, where the season was cut short after a few games because of the COVID-19 pandemic. He then moved back to Cincinnati for three seasons at Xavier.
He comes from a large and prominent baseball family. His father Mike Bell played briefly in the majors, then had a long career in coaching before dying of kidney cancer when Luke was in college. His uncle, David Bell, was a player and manager in the majors, and his grandfather Buddy Bell and great-grandfather Gus Bell both played in the majors as well (Buddy was also a manager). Luke stands out as the only pitcher in the family - all the others were position players, and mainly infielders. If he were to reach the majors, he would be the first fourth-generation player to do so. He studied business analytics at Xavier, making him a good fit for a future front office position if his career as a player does not work out.
