Biographical Information[edit]

Luis Fierro was a star hitter in Nicaragua's amateur league and played several times for the Nicaraguan national team.

Fierro hit .398/.451/.446 for Santa Cecilia in 1969; league leaders for that season are not listed but one imagines those numbers may have given him a batting title. He played for Nicaragua in the 1969 Amateur World Series. In 1970, he fell to .254/.301/.321 for Granada and .246/.310/.288 in 1971. In '72, he improved his batting line to .304/.347/.411.

In the 1974 Amateur World Series, he helped Nicaragua win the Silver Medal. He batted .368/.391/.477 for Granada in '75, leading the league in batting average and hits (81). He fell to .254/.327/.488 with Leon in 1976 and leading in intentional walks (12) and tying Róger Guillén for the lead with 16 dingers.

The big first baseman hit .316/.408/.510 with 18 homers and 81 RBI in 99 games in 1977. He set a league record with 33 intentional walks, a mark that stood until Ofilio Castro topped it in 2011. He had an off-year in '78 (.275/.324/.443).

In 1981, he batted .274/.341/.544 with 19 homers and 59 RBI in 63 games. He led the league in both RBI and circuit clouts. It was his last league-leading campaign. At age 37, he hit .210/.277/.260. He was back up to .314/.386/.559 in 1983 with 16 homers, 3 shy of leader Ernesto López.

Fierro batted .269/.341/.345 in 1984, .219/.240/.279 in 1985 and .259/.307/.463 in 1986, still showing pop at age 41. In 1987, he hit only .167/.231/.298 for Granada. He had hit .279/.338/.425 with 108 homers in Nicaragua, driving in 466 in 858 games and drawing 134 intentional walks. As of 2008, he was 24th in league history in home runs.
