Biographical Information

Lou Hardie played four seasons in the majors for four different teams, mostly at catcher and in the outfield.

He is the only major leaguer with the last name "Hardie", although Hardie Henderson, his contemporary, had "Hardie" as a first name.

There was a bit of a controversy when he signed with the Chicago White Stockings in 1886. The September 8, 1886 issue of Sporting Life devoted several paragraphs to it. Apparently Hardie was blacklisted, apparently unfairly, apparently without his knowledge, by Atlanta, although the facts hardly made the true situation clear. The problem was, however, repaired.

He played for Oakland in 1900.

He worked one National League game as an umpire in 1887.

Sporting Life once stated that he was "of the educated class".
