Biographical Information

Outfielder Lou Almada made the major league roster of the New York Giants out of Spring Training in 1927 but got hurt as the team barnstormed up the eastern seaboard. He never reached the Major Leagues again. Almada played for eleven years in the Pacific Coast League and is one of the league's greatest players.

He had hoped to become the first Mexican-born major leaguer, but that distinction went to his brother, Mel Almada. Although born in Mexico, he had grown up in Los Angeles, CA, where his father was the Mexican Consul, and had a wholly American education.

He earned the nickname "Ladies Day Louie" for his prolific hitting on Thursday day games (Ladies Day in the PCL).
