Liberia

Liberia is located in western Africa, on the Gulf of Guinea, and was founded in 1822 by freed American slaves who returned to the continent. It was the first republic in Africa and its capital was named Monrovia in honor pf President James Monroe. Liberia and Ethiopia were the only states that managed to remain independent while the entire continent was conquered by European powers in the 19th Century, but it was wracked by unrest and civil war for decades starting in the 1980s.
