Biographical Information[edit]
Pitcher Lefty Mills served in the U.S. Navy from 1928 to 1933 as an aviation machinist. That is where he first played baseball - he had dropped out of school at a young age - and proved to be quite gifted, eventually catching the eye of scouts, and he was signed as soon as his enlistment was over. He served again in the military during World War II and while he tried to return to professional after being discharged in early 1946, he did not make it back to the majors and played semi-pro baseball rather than report to the minors.
