Lefty Bell
Charles Bell
- Bats unknown, Throws Left
Biographical Information[edit]
Lefty Bell pitched briefly for the Homestead Grays of the Negro National League in 1948. Pittsburgh papers list him as "Charles (Lefty) Bell" and claim he was from Mississippi and had pitched the previous season in Lakeland, FL, but further research into pitchers from that state make it likely that his real name was in fact James Bell. Whatever his real name was, he did not finish the season with Homestead, turning up with the Atlanta Black Crackers at the end of July. He continued pitching in the southern United States for a few years after that, but most of his life remains shrouded in mystery.
