Replacing the Leesburg Packers in 1953, the Leesburg Lakers started strong with a 38-31 first-half, thirdi n the 8-team Florida State League. In the second half, though, they imploded with a 18-46 record. They drew 17,000 fans, 7th in the 8-team league. The Lakers scored the fewest runs in the FSL (619) while allowing 685. Don Urquhart (8-1, 2.12) had a fine time on the mound, while the club also included former major leaguer Ray Yochim (4-6, 3.60; .380/~.466/.560) and future GM Syd Thrift (3-4, 4.43; .231/~.333/.323), a pitcher/first baseman that year.
