Biographical Information[edit]

Lebo Powell was a first-round draft pick who never made it beyond A ball.

The Philadelphia Phillies chose Powell with the 13th pick of the 1980 amateur draft; the other two high school catchers taken in the first round that year were Jeff Reed at #12 and John Gibbons at #24. Powell hit .248/.339/.389 as a rookie with the Helena Phillies, with 24 passed balls in 41 games. The Floridian led Pioneer League backstops in passed balls. In 1981, Lebo hit just .219/.317/.371 for the Spartanburg Phillies, though he did homer 10 times in 329 AB. He had 17 passed balls. Spartanburg's other catcher did better - he was picked 24 rounds after Powell, a kid named Darren Daulton who would go on to be a household name. In 1982, Powell ended his career with a .241/.297/.404 line for Spartanburg.
