Biographical Information[edit]
Larry Murphy was a 34-year-old rookie during his one year in the majors, when he played as the regular left fielder and the most-utilized right fielder on the 1891 Washington Statesmen.
Murphy was born in Toronto, ON in 1857. While he was one of the earliest major leaguers born in Toronto, by the time he came to the majors at age 34, a number of younger Toronto-born players had come to the majors before him.
Since Larry was a Canadian, it is not surprising that he often played in the minors for teams in the Northern part of the U.S. He played for St. Paul, Minneapolis and Buffalo, among other teams.
In his one year in the majors, Larry had a good OBP but his SLG was a bit below average.
A SABR Baseball Research Journal issue mentioned him in an article titled One Season Wonders. Few players have played at least half of their team's games in one season and then never appeared again in the majors. The record for an outfielder (at least at the time of the article) was set by Goat Anderson, who was in 117 games in the outfield in his only season.
