Biographical Information[edit]

Larry File, sometimes called Sam File, was the youngest player in the National League when he pitched for the Philadelphia Phillies in 1940. He was also one of the oldest former member of the Phillies when he died in 2008. File missed the 1943-1945 seasons serving in the Coast Guard during World War II.

Other than File, 14 major leaguers had been born in Chester, PA through 2008. Johnny Podgajny was not only born in Chester a couple of years before File, but broke into the majors in the same year as File, also with the Phillies.
