Biographical Information[edit]
Lanny Harris was one of the minor league umpires promoted to the major leagues when the regular umpires went on strike at the start of the 1979 season. Harris was assigned to the National League staff and was kept on board when the conflict was settled and the regular umpires returned to work. Like his seven other colleagues in the same situation, he was ostracized by the regular umpires and treated as a scab, however. He toughed it out until the end of the 1985 season, when he was discharged, ostensibly for poor performance, but in fact because it was impossible for him to work with his crew mates.
He died of a brain tumor at the age of 51.
