Biographical Information[edit]

Gwang-soo Kim played 11 seasons in the Korea Baseball Organization. An infielder, Kim broke in during the KBO's initial season, 1982, with the OB Bears, hitting .272/~.359/.320 in 47 games. In 1983, he batted .223/~.276/.288 in 84 contests. Playing 100 games in '84, Kim hit .265/~.334/.351. In 1985, his batting line was .255/~.343/.370 and he socked a career-high 9 home runs. He did not go deep once in 1986 when he hit .248/~.352/.296. In 1987, he batted .243/~.345/.283. He produced at a .262/~.346/.363 rate in 1988 with a career-high 20 doubles and 63 RBI. He also stole 25 bases in 29 tries.

Kim hit .220/~.327/.269 in 1989. In 1990, the 36-year-old veteran hit .266/~.351/.332. Kim slumped to .226/~.302/.253 in 1991 but the old-timer swiped 50 bases (he was caught 22 times), double his prior high. He was 6 steals behind league leader Soon-chul Lee. In 1992, Kim hit .267/~.341/.313 and fell back down to 8 steals (in 10 attempts). He retired as a player.

After his playing career ended, Kim coached for the Bears. He was selected for South Korea's coaching staff in the 2007 Asian Championship and 2008 Final Olympic Qualifier. He coached for South Korea in the 2008 Olympics and helped them win a historic Gold Medal. In 2011, he became manager of the Bears when Kyung-moon Kim stepped down. He went 38-38 and was replaced by Jin-wook Kim for 2012.
