Biographical Information[edit]
Kris Kline was a minor league infielder who became a long-time scout.
Kline was at Grand Canyon College when they were winning the NAIA College World Series every year. He was picked by the California Angels in the 15th round of the 1982 amateur draft. He hit .257/.359/.362 for the 1982 Salem Angels, with 14 steals in 22 tries. He started at third base for Salem. In '83, he fell to .244/.316/.301 for the Peoria Suns, splitting time between shortstop and third base. He had 15 steals and was caught 8 times but failed to homer in 352 at-bats. The Grand Canyon alumnus hit .258/.328/.381 with 27 doubles, 8 triples and 16 swipes (in 22 attempts) for the 1984 Peoria Chiefs. He split shortstop with Kent Anderson and also saw significant time in the outfield as well as a little action at 2B and 3B. In 1985, Kline ended his career with a .286/.331/.363 line for the Redwood Pioneers, backing up at second and third. Overall, he had hit .262/.332/.354 in 421 minor league games, with 76 doubles and 57 steals in 84 tries. He fielded .933 in 146 games at SS, .883 in 134 at 3B and .955 in 50 at 2B.
Kline worked as a scout for the Angels for 10 years then was with the Arizona Diamondbacks for seven years, the last three as the Diamondbacks’ Western Supervisor. He was Washington Nationals' Western Crosschecker for 2 years, and the Assistant Director of Scouting/National Crosschecker for the Nats in 2009. He was promoted to their Scouting Director in October 2009.
