Biographical Information[edit]

Pitcher Kevin Mendon played in the minor leagues from 1978 to 1982, all in the Montreal Expos minor league system. The Expos drafted him in the 9th round of the 1978 amateur draft, out of Emporia State University in Emporia, KS. Only a week before the draft, on June 1, 1978, Mendon had pitched the first nine-inning no-hitter in the history of the NAIA College World Series. The 2-0 win came with Emporia facing elimination against Missouri Southern State College, and the school went on to win the championship two days later with another win over Missouri Southern. This remains the only title ever won by Emporia State. He was named to the school's athletic Hall of Fame in 1999.

Mendon was excellent in his first three seasons in the Expos system, as he went 6-3, 3.39 in 12 games for the Jamestown Expos of the New York-Penn League in 1978 and followed that by going 13-11, 2.43 for the West Palm Beach Expos of the Florida State League in 1979. In 1980, splitting the year between the AA Memphis Chicks and the AAA Denver Bears, he combined to go 14-3, 3.41 in 27 games (25 starts), winning 7 games at each level. He was added to the Expos' 40-man roster following the season but got hurt during spring training in 1981 and missed the entire season as a result. He made a comeback with West Palm Beach in 1982, making 6 starts in 12 appearances and going 2-0, 3.24. However, he walked 25 batters in 33 1/3 innings and was let go by the Expos, ending his career.

He pitched for the Leones del Escogido in the Dominican League managed by Felipe Alou, who was a coach for the major league Expos at the time, following his excellent 1980 season.
