Biographical Information[edit]

Kevin Matthews was a first-round pick in 2011.

Matthews was 4-2 with a 1.68 ERA as a high school senior, allowing 14 hits and 14 walks, striking out 94 in 42 innings. He had a University of Virginia commitment before the Texas Rangers took him with the 33rd pick of the 2011 amateur draft. The pick was compensation for the loss of Cliff Lee, just like Texas's other first-rounder, Zach Cone. Mathews had shown good athletic skill in high school, doing a 360-degree slam dunk in basketball despite being under 6 feet tall. Kevin signed for a $936,000 bonus; the scout was Ryan Coe.

Matthews made his pro debut with the AZL Rangers on July 3 against the AZL Reds, working one inning with one hit, one strikeout and no runs.
