Karl Weitz played for the South African national team in the 2008 Final Olympic Qualification Tournament. He had been recruited by Brett Willemburg. The teenager went 0 for 15 with 3 walks while playing 2 games apiece at catcher, left field and DH. He was the lightest hitter on a South African squad that only batted .167. He was then on the South African roster for the 2009 World Baseball Classic. He was 1 for 6 with four strikeouts in the Classic, serving as the South African right fielder. Weitz's hit was a single off Cuban star Norge Vera.
