Biographical Information[edit]
Kanoe Chuma was the first person to translate the term "baseball" into the Japanese "yakyu" in 1894. In 1897, he published Yakyu, the first book on baseball in Japanese with notes and illustrations and developed much of the terminlogy used in Japanese baseball. He was also instrumental in making baseball a sport practiced by high school students and served as a coach.
Chuma was inducted into the Japanese Baseball Hall of Fame in 1970.
