Biographical Information[edit]
Infielder Justin Viele played college ball for the Santa Clara University Broncos and was known primarily for his defense at shortstop. He graduated in 2013 with a degree in sociology. The Baltimore Orioles drafted Viele in the 37th round of the 2013 Amateur Draft and he played in their minor league system from 2013-2014. He spent most of his 2013 season with the GCL Orioles where he posted a .407 on-base percentage by drawing 31 walks in 49 games. In 2014, he drove in 23 runs and stole 11 bases in split time between the Class A-Short Season Aberdeen Ironbirds and Class A Delmarva Shorebirds. Overall Viele hit .211/.333/.266 while appearing in 126 minor league games.
During spring training in 2015 the Orioles told Viele they had no place for him in their organization as a player, but offered him a coaching position instead.[1] He was a coach for the Frederick Keys in 2015, then became an assistant coach at his alma mater in 2016. He started the 2016/2017 season coaching the Broncos until the Los Angeles Dodgers hired him prior to the 2017 season. He was hitting coach of the Ogden Raptors in 2017, Rancho Cucamonga Quakes in 2018, and Great Lakes Loons in 2019. After the 2018 season he also served as the hitting coach for the Glendale Desert Dogs in the Arizona Fall League.
In 2020 he was named co-hitting coach of the San Francisco Giants alongside Donnie Ecker. In 2022 he became sole hitting coach after Ecker's departure to become bench coach of the Texas Rangers. Viele remained the hitting coach in 2023 and 2024, in the latter year sharing the role with Pat Burrell. In 2025, he re-united with Ecker as he moved to the Rangers as an assistant hitting coach, while Ecker was the de facto hitting coach with the title of "Offensive Cooridinator".
