Biographical Information[edit]
Julio Gotay played ten years in the majors. He got over 300 at-bats in a season only in 1962, when he was the regular shortstop for the St. Louis Cardinals.
Yuyín played for the Mayagüez Indians, Ponce Lions and Santurce Crabbers of the Puerto Rican Winter Baseball League. He was the uncle of Ruben Gotay.
Gotay was known as an extremely superstitious player. He kept a cheese sandwich in the back pocket of his uniform for good luck. He also thought crosses on the field (for example, crossed bats) brought very bad luck.
His obituary stated that after baseball he was a "school master" in Ponce for many years.
