Biographical Information[edit]

Juan Oviedo Sr. pitched for the Nicaraguan national team. He is the father of Juan Oviedo Jr.

Oviedo was 7-7 with a 1.37 ERA in 1970 and struck out 149 in 1971, when he led the league in wins (15) and complete games (13). He pitched a no-hitter in the finals that year. He was 1-1 with a 3.75 ERA and 14 K in 12 IP for Nicaragua in the 1971 Amateur World Series. He fell to 8-6, 3.16 in '72 but rebounded to 10-4, 1.86 the next campaign. He was 7-2 with a a league-best 1.40 ERA in 1974. In the 1974 Amateur World Series, he went 1-0 with a 3.60 ERA for the Silver Medalists, beating Team Canada.

He had a 5-7, 1.53 record in 1975 and 4-6, 2.44 in 1976 then went 11-6 with a 2.00 ERA in '77. He moved to the bullpen after that, regularly having ERAs under 2. He finished at 87-64, 2.18 in domestic competition.
