Biographical Information[edit]
Catcher Juan Ortiz was a member of the Dominican national team for 16 years.
Ortiz debuted for the Dominicans in the 1969 Amateur World Series. He won a Silver Medal in the 1970 Central American and Caribbean Games. He was with the Dominicans for the 1970 Amateur World Series. In the 1971 Amateur World Series, he was on the World All-Star team that lost to champion Cuba; his hit off José Antonio Huelga ended the no-hitter in the 8th inning. He played in the 1971 Pan American Games. He hit .458/.567/.583 with 7 runs and 4 RBI to help the Dominican Republic win the Silver at the 1974 Central American and Caribbean Games (when the team won a Silver); he led the team with six walks. He also played in the 1975 Pan American Games, 1978 Central American and Caribbean Games, 1979 Pan American Games (a Silver Medal), 1982 Central American and Caribbean Games (a Gold, beating out Cuba), 1982 Amateur World Series and 1984 Olympics. In 1990, he was named to the Dominican Sports Hall of Fame, the first baseball player to be inducted who had never played professionally. He coached for the Dominican Republic in the 1992 Olympics.
