Biographical Information[edit]

Juan Guilbe played in Puerto Rico and the Negro Leagues. His brother Felix Guilbe played in the Negro Leagues and his son Juan Guilbe Jr. followed him to the Puerto Rican national team.

In the 1938 Central American and Caribbean Games, he competed in both baseball and the javelin. He was 4 for 15 for the 1940 New York Cubans, allowing one run in four innings and going 1-0. He played first base and right field in addition to pitching. In the 1943-1944 Puerto Rican League, his two homers tied Juan “Chico” Sánchez for the league lead.

Guilbe went 0-2 with a 3.98 ERA for the Indianapolis Clowns in 1947. He went 3 for 9 with a double and a triple. He was 5-0 for the Ponce Lions in 1947-1948. In 1992, he was inducted into the Puerto Rican Baseball Hall of Fame.
