Juan Cruz has been a pitcher for Holguín. He was 2-5 with a 5.02 ERA in his first two seasons. In his third campaign, 2008-2009, he was 5-5 with a 4.10 ERA and .333 opponent average; his ERA was just .07 worse than teammate Aroldis Chapman, who got a lot more attention for his strikeouts and speeding fastball.

Cruz fell to 4-6, 7.83 with a .364 opponent average in 2009-2010. He allowed 60 earned runs, 8th in the Cuban Serie Nacional. In 2010-2011, he was 4-10 but lowered his ERA to 4.74, well ahead of the team total of 6.03. He was third in the league in losses, tied Frank Navarro for the most starts (22), was 10th in innings (123 1/3), 5th in hits (148), tied for 5th in earned runs (65), tied Yoannis Turcas for 7th in walks (53) and tied for 6th in homers allowed (16).
