Biographical Information[edit]
Shortstop Jose Mateo played in the pro ranks from 1995-2004, mostly in the independent leagues. In his three minor league seasons in the Los Angeles Dodgers (1995-1996) and Atlanta Braves (1998) organizations he hit .196/.290/.229 in 231 games. He played six games with the AAA Richmond Braves in 1998. His offensive numbers in the independent leagues were somewhat better at .235/.327/.280 while appearing in 191 games.
After completing his playing career, Mateo may have coached the DSL Blue Jays in 2012-2013 though this could not be confirmed. He managed the team from 2014-2016 and coached for them in 2017-2019 and 2021-2024. He was slated to coach the DSL Blue Jays in 2020 before COVID-19 shut down the minor league season.
Mateo should not be confused with another Jose Mateo who coached the DSL Padres for a number of years.
