Biographical Information[edit]

Jose Castro played in the Mexican League in the 1940s and early 1950s.

He debuted with the Algodoneros de Torreon in 1943, hitting .289/~.407/.356 in 21 games. The infielder improved to .322/~.434/.366 in 1944 for the Aguila de Veracruz, with 11 steals and 49 runs in 75 games. He pitched as well, with a 1-3, 5.40 record. He was 7th in the league in average, between Bobby Ávila and Epitacio Torres. That was the high point of his career. He fell to .237/~.326/.329 while his pitching was steady (1-1, 5.32).

Splitting time between two teams in 1946, he only was 2 for 17. Playing time for native Mexicans was down with more Americans coming to the league. He was back to regular time in '47 with Veracruz, batting .232/~.325/.280 with a 2.84 ERA. In 1948, he batted .242/~.358/.306. In 1949, is listed solely as a pitcher with the Tecolotes de los Dos Laredos (1-4, 3.95) and solely as a position player with Veracruz (.274/~.418/.316, 59 BB in 77 G), hitting his lone career homer.

In 1950, he was 1-2 for two clubs in the Rio Grande Valley League and hit .261/~.396/.305 for Veracruz. With the Aguila in '51, he hit .282/~.386/.318 to end his career. In 503 games in the LMB, he had batted .265/~.361/.314. He had drawn 269 walks and scored 230 runs.
