José Alvarez was 2 for 3 with a run for the Mexican national team in Cuba's first loss ever on the international stage, at the 1930 Central American Games. He was 0 for 8 for the rest of the Games, though. He pitched as well (0-1, 3.38), doing a solid job for the Silver Medal winners. Defensively, he had 6 putouts, 3 assists and no errors while appearing at catcher, second, pitcher and the outfield. He was 1 for 7 with a run and a RBI for Agrario de México in 1938.
