Biographical Information[edit]

José Meléndez was a top amateur pitcher in Puerto Rico in the 1980s.

Meléndez was on the Puerto Rican national team in the 1986 Amateur World Series, 1987 Pan American Games (Bronze Medal), 1988 Baseball World Cup (0-1, 5.59 record; only Mariano Quiñones was higher for Puerto Rico), 1988 Olympics (third place, but baseball was not a medal event that year) and 1989 Intercontinental Cup (Bronze).

In Puerto Rico, he won 43 games in 14 years with a 2.99 ERA, peaking at 0.52 in 1988. He was named to the Puerto Rican Amateur Baseball Hall of Fame in 2015. He coached for the Puerto Rican women's national team in the 2015 Pan American Games and 2018 Women's Baseball World Cup.
