Biographical Information[edit]
Pitcher José Urquidy played for the Houston Astros from 2019 to 2023. He was part of the Astros' World Series-winning team in 2022 when he had his best season, going 13-8, 3.94 in 29 games. However, in 2023, he was just 3-3, 5.29 in 16 games as he was slowed by injuries, but still played in the postseason. He had in fact played in the postseason during all five of his major league seasons, including recording both of Houston's wins in their loss to the Atlanta Braves in the 2021 World Series. The following year, with the Astros flush with great starting pitchers, he only made one appearance on the way to the title, a three-inning relief stint in Game 3 on November 1st; he allowed just one hit and no runs in a 7-0 loss to the Philadelphia Phillies. In spite of his less-than-stellar season in 2023, he made three appearances in the postseason, including a winning start against the Minnesota Twins in the Division Series on October 11th, and another start in Game 4 of the ALCS against the Texas Rangers on October 19th.
However, Urquidy missed all of the 2024 season with an elbow ailment that eventually resulted in his undergoing Tommy John surgery that June. He became a free agent after the season and while still recovering from the surgery signed a one-year deal with the Detroit Tigers in March 2025. The deal was for a minimal salary (in baseball terms) of $1 million, coupled with a $4-million club option and significant performance bonuses for the following season. He was not expected to make it back to a major league mound before the second half of the first season, if that, and the Tigers had some measure of protection were he to suffer a setback in his rehabilitation. He was placed on the Tigers' 60-day injured list immediately after signing his contract.
Urquidy was originally signed by the Astros as an international amateur free agent from Mexico on March 2, 2015. He was 24 when he first reached the majors in July of 2019 and he won a game in that year's World Series when he tossed five scoreless innings in a Game 5 starts against the Washington Nationals on October 26th. He played for the Mexican national team in the 2023 World Baseball Classic. In his only appearance, he was the starting and winning pitcher in a must-win game against Team Canada on March 15th that pushed Mexico into the tournament's second round. He also pitched in relief in the semi-finals which Mexico lost to Japan.
