Biographical Information[edit]

Pitcher Jorge Guzman was originally signed by the Houston Astros on August 15, 2014. He began his pro career in 2015, when he played with three different teams: the DSL Astros Blue, the DSL Astros Orange and the GCL Astros. Altogether, he was 3-4, 5.04 on 17 games, pitching 55 1/3 innings. In 2016, he split his season between the GCL Astros and the Greeneville Astros of the Appalachian League, going 3-4, 4.05 in 13 games and 40 innings. On November 17, 2016, he was traded by the Astros to the New York Yankees along with Albert Abreu in return for Brian McCann.

Jorge spent only one season in the Yankees' system, in 2017. Playing for the Staten Island Yankees of the New York-Penn League, he had his best season by far, going 5-3, 2.30 in 13 games, all starts. In 66 2/3 innings, he struck out 88 batters while walking only 18. On December 11th, he was involved in the second major trade of his young career, heading to the Miami Marlins along with 2B Starlin Castro and fellow prospect Jose Devers in return for All-Star OF Giancarlo Stanton. He was assigned to the Jupiter Hammerheads of the Florida State League in 2018, where he made 21 starts, pitched 96 innings, but finished with a record of 0-9, 4.03. His main weakness was his control, as he issued 64 walks, negating the fact that he had allowed just 84 hits and struck out 101 batters. Still, he was named to the World Team for the 2018 Futures Game as one of the better prospects in an otherwise rather shallow Marlins farm system, and thanks to his ability to hit triple digits on the radar gun. He was also named a mid-season All-Star in the FSL.
