Biographical Information

Jong-hyun Won has pitched in the Korea Baseball Organization and for the South Korean national team.

Won was a high school teammate of Woo-chan Cha. The LG Twins took him in the second round of the 2006 KBO draft and he played on their minor league team for a few years. In 2008-2009, he fulfilled his military service by playing for the Korean Police Baseball Team. He returned to LG but was released due to an elbow injury.

After surgery and rehab, Won tried out for the NC Dinos, who signed him. He made his KBO debut in 2014 and was a frequently-used reliever, going 5-3 with a save and a 4.06 ERA in 73 outings, fanning 73 in 71 IP. He was second in the KBO in games pitched, two behind Hae-soo Jin. He felt dizzy in spring training 2015, though, and was diagnosed with colorectal cancer. He wound up undergoing chemotherapy, missing the whole season while battling the cancer. While he was out, his teammates wore "155" on their cabs for the speed of the last pitch he had thrown (155 kmph, 96 mph).

The sidearm hurler returned to the field in 2016 and was 3-3 with three saves and a 3.18 ERA in 54 outings. NC made it to the Korean Series for the first time but were swept in the 2016 Korean Series by the Doosan Bears. He then was picked for South Korea's squad for the 2017 World Baseball Classic. He and high school teammate Cha were the only pitchers used in all three South Korean games as the hosts failed to advance. He had a 4.91 ERA, the median mark on the staff. Both runs he allowed came on a Randolph Oduber homer.
