Jon Niederer was a scout for three decades. He began his baseball career as a ticket seller for the Pittsburgh Pirates in 1973, fresh out of college. Four years later, Murray Cook and Pete Peterson made him a scout. He signed Stan Belinda and was in charge of a strong scouting camp string from West Virginia and Ohio to Pennsylvania. After leaving the Pirates in 1986, he scouted for the California Angels from 1987-2003, signing Gary DiSarcina and encouraging the club to take David Eckstein off waivers. He scouted for the Seattle Mariners from 2004-2008, before contracting Lou Gehrig disease. He died a year later.
He got World Series rings from the 1979 Pirates and 2002 Angels.
