Biographical Information[edit]

Jon Denney made his pro debut in 2013.

Denney hit .459 with 46 RBI in 42 games as a high school senior and was named first-team All-American by Rawlings; Baseball America did not put him on any of their three All-American teams but did name him the #3 catcher for the 2013 amateur draft. The Boston Red Sox took him in the third round, behind scout Chris Mears. He signed for a $875,000 bonus. He was the 81st overall selection.

He sputtered in his pro debut, hitting .203/.379/.243 with no homers and two RBI in 26 games for the GCL Red Sox; he drew 18 walks but struck out in 29 of 74 at-bats. He fielded .978 and threw out 34.6% of those who tried to steal. The off-season was even worse, as he ran afoul of the law. He was arrested in December for disorderly conduct, possession of alcohol as a minor and littering after he threw a bottle of rum into oncoming traffic. Then, in March, he was arrested for driving with a suspended license. The Red Sox said they would leave him away from on-field activities while addressing his character.
