Biographical Information[edit]

Johnny Smith was drafted by the Houston Astros in the 21st round in 1994 out of Auburn High School in Auburn, NY. He played two seasons in the Astros farm system in the Gulf Coast League (1994–1995). If Smith had reached the New York-Penn League, he would have played for the Auburn Astros in his hometown.

Smith's numbers were unimpressive as a pro - in 1994, he hit .196/.220/.250 and fielded .768 at third base with 22 errors in 32 games. He failed to lead GCL third basemen in miscues as Leotis Warren had 3 more. In 1995, Smith's batting line was .149/.213/.299 with 23 strikeouts in 67 at-bats. He hit his only pro home run and fielded .745 at the hot corner.
