Biographical information[edit]

Johnny Gonding was a catcher in the western minor leagues (C to single A).

From a 1908 newspaper article, he is said to have caught about 1400 games to that point, averaging 100 games or more a season. His batting average was .226, which he maintained over the prior 14 seasons. He remained in the minors his entire career, and was guarded by Pa Rourke from the big league scouts who would come looking for talent. He was financially well off in the minors, and was happy where he was at the time.
