Biographical Information

If things had been different, John Weyhing might have been a Hall of Fame pitcher. He pitched in the major leagues in 1888 and 1889 but died in 1890 four days before he reached age 21. He had pitched extremely well in 1888, and only had one game in 1889. He was the brother of pitcher Gus Weyhing who had a successful major league career.

His obituary in the Louisville Courier-Journal gave his age as 24, and said he had died of consumption after being ill for nearly a year. He had been considered one of the best amateur pitchers in Louisville before entering the pros. The newspaper said he had originally been with "the Athletics" but he never appeared in the majors with the Philadelphia Athletics. There does exist, however, a baseball card of him in connection with the 1887 Philadelphia Athletics.

Miscellaneous

Assuming that Weyhing did indeed die before the age of 21, he was one of only four major leaguers known to have done so. The other three were Jay Dahl, Will Smalley and Gus Williams.
