Biographical Information[edit]
Johnny Ward pitched one game with the Providence Grays in 1885, which he lost in throwing a complete game, giving up 7 runs (4 earned) in 8 innings. All that was known about him was that he was from East St. Louis, IL and worked at the stockyards.
Peter Morris was able to identify this player from city directories. He married a woman named Nellie Sullivan of Belleville, IL. The couple then moved to Kansas City, MO, where they lived until John died in 1899. He was buried in his wife's hometown of Belleville, in Mount Carmel Cemetery, where his wife eventually joined him. An obituary in the St. Louis Post Dispatch confirmed the date of death.
