John Smith

John Smith was a college coach for over 30 years.
Smith was a Green Beret for three years between junior college and college. In 1973, he was a graduate assistant at Sacramento State. He was head coach at Encina High School from 1974-1978. He then became head coach at Sacramento State for 1978-1979. He was 19-31 that year, but then had winning records 14 years in a row. In 1988, he set a school record with 43 wins. He took the school to the 1986 Division II College World Series and 1988 Division II College World Series (finishing second in NCAA Division II that year, losing the finale in extra innings). He coached Tim Wheeler, who became the first He won 879 games in his 32 seasons then retired, replaced by Reggie Christiansen.
