Biographical Information

John Shoupe played three seasons in the majors for three different teams. His minor league career went through 1890. He was the first major leaguer born in West Virginia, although Jack Glasscock, born later in the state, came to the majors a couple days earlier.

John made his major league debut with the 1879 Troy Trojans, a team which featured Dan Brouthers, who was six years younger.

Sporting Life usually spelled his name "Shoupe"", and the Wikpedia entry for him (as of 07-31-19) also spells it Shoupe.

"Manager West is busily engaged corresponding with and signing players, and up to date has se­cured the following: Bill Sweeney, pitcher: Jack Shoupe, short stop, and Eddie Fusselback, of last season's team. These are all first-class players, Sweeney being an excellent pitcher and splendid batter, and "Pa" Shoupe was the acknowledged best short stop in the State League of '85." - Sporting Life, Jan. 20, 1886
