Biographical information[edit]

John C. "Red" Shackelford was born at Howard County, Missouri in October, 1886, according to census records. He gained notoriety by pitching a season-opening shutout on April 11, 1917 for the American Association Milwaukee Brewers against the St. Paul Saints at Milwaukee's Athletic Park. The Brewers defeated the Saints, 4-0, behind the seven-hit effort.

He was active in the minor leagues from 1909 to 1919.
