Biographical Information[edit]

John O'Neil was a local catcher who played four games with the New York Giants. His first game was in 1899 against the Brooklyn Superbas, while his last was in 1902 against the Cincinnati Reds.

He worked as a clerk in New York City's sewer department for over 40 years and lived in Richmond Hill, NY, in the borough of Queens. When he passed away in 1943, his wife had pre-deceased him by a couple of years, but he left a daughter and sister.

His last named was spelled both O'Neil and O'Neill, although his obituary uses the single "L" spelling. He is not to be confused with outfielder John O'Neill, who made his major league debut in 1904. Nor should he be confused with shortstop John O'Neil, who was in the big leagues in 1946.
