Biographical Information[edit]
Eighteen-year-old John Merritt played in one game for the New York Giants as an outfielder in 1913 but had no plate appearances. He later went on to minor league success as a pitcher, winning 215 games in 14 seasons. He played for the St. Paul Saints from 1918 to 1925. In 1919, he was 19-9 with a 2.62 ERA, and the next season, he went 21-10 with a 2.63 ERA. He was 20-11 with a 3.37 ERA for the club in 1923.
After baseball, he was the city clerk of Tupelo, MS for 20 years, co-owner of a clothing store and deputy clerk in a courthouse. [1]
