Biographical Information[edit]
John Mercer played just one game in his Major League career. This was for the St. Louis Cardinals in 1912. He had just one at-bat, and did not get a hit.
In some early editions of the Baseball Encyclopedia, he was confused with Jack Mercer, who pitched one game for the Pittsburgh Pirates in 1910.
"The St. Louis Club has secured first baseman C. E. Mercer, of the Louisiana State University. Many major league scouts were tipped off to him this Spring. Mercer is a heavy hitter, and while somewhat inexperienced as a fielder he grasps the points quickly, and under Bresnahan should develop quickly." - Sporting Life, June 29, 1912
