Biographical Information[edit]
John McDonald pitched one day in the majors, on September 3, 1907, for the Washington Senators against the Philadelphia Athletics. As a hitter that day he went 1-for-3, but as a pitcher he gave up 11 runs (6 earned) in 6 innings, explaining why there was no return engagement.
John was born with the last name "McDonnell" in Throop, PA, near Scranton, PA. He attended the future Kutztown University of Pennsylvania, with his time there possibly overlapping with that of Harry Hoch. The minor league record is not complete, but he apparently pitched in the minors at least in 1904 and 1906. Sporting Life referred to him as the "Erie twirling recruit", implying he may have played for the 1907 Erie Sailors as well, and called him "Jack".
He is not to be confused with the other John McDonald who played nearly one hundred years later.
