Biographical Information[edit]
John "Pork Chop" Hoffman was up with the Houston Colt .45's in 1964 and the Houston Astros in 1965. He also played seven years in the minors.
He was part of the youth movement of the Colt .45's. Although he was 20 in 1964, he was not the youngest player on the team, and there were numerous players who were also 20, including Rusty Staub and Joe Morgan. As a catcher, Hoffman backed up 21-year-old Jerry Grote, who hit .181.
The Chop Hoffman who played in the minor leagues from 1987 to 1990 was most likely his son.
