John Lawrence Higgins

Biographical Information[edit]

John Higgins began umpiring in the Gulf Coast League in 1977. He moved up to the Florida State League in 1978, the Eastern League in 1980 and the Pacific Coast League from 1982 to 1984. In 1985, he moved to the American Association.

On Opening Day in 1991, he got a chance to work an American League game when the regular umpires could not make it on time, having just settled a labor dispute on the last day of spring training. He then worked five more games at the start of the 1995 season, when the regular umpires were on strike.
