Biographical Information[edit]

John Harrell put up an impressive batting line during his two games in the majors - .500/.625/.500. A catcher, he played 18 innings in the field without committing an error and without allowing a stolen base.

John was born in Long Beach, CA, was drafted out of junior college in the 31st round of the 1966 Amateur Draft, and went on to play seven seasons in the minors. Beginning at age 18, he was done in the minors at age 24. John hit an overall .227 in the minors, with 2 home runs. He was good at drawing walks. John played exclusively catcher.

His two games in the big leagues were both in October of 1969, and were both with the San Francisco Giants against the San Diego Padres. He got at least one hit, one walk and one RBI in each game. In his first big league game on October 1st, he got hits off Joe Niekro and Tommie Sisk. In his second game on October 2nd, he got a hit off Clay Kirby.

He is not the same person as the star basketball player for Duke University who was also named John Harrell.
